A recent smartphone performance test has highlighted that the Apple iPhone has the best touchscreen on the market when compared to the Google Nexus One, Motorola Droid and HTC Droid Eris.

The MOTO Development Group outlined that the iPhone had the superior touch screen technology after it conducted a performance test among top brands in the industry.

The company has created a simple technique so anyone can evaluate the resolution and accuracy of touchscreen devices before they buy. The test is based on a basic drawing program that measures how effective the device can draw straight lines.

According to MOTO, a quality touchscreen should be able to draw clean straight lines while going very slowly.

“On inferior touchscreens it’s basically impossible to draw straight lines. Instead the lines look jagged, stair-stepped or zig-zag, no matter how slowly you go,” said the company in a statement.

Another aspect that MOTO measured was pressure and how each device performed when only lightly touching the screen or with the edge of a finger.

“The amount of pressure and the part of the finger you use on the screen has an impact on how well it senses. This is important because quick keyboard use and light flicks on the screen really push the limits of the touch panel’s ability to sense.”

The Apple iPhone was the winner in the end and according to MOTO, it showed the most linear tracking with the least amount of stair-stepping. The HTC Droid Eris and Google Nexus One tied for second with faint ‘wiggling’ and the Motorola Droid came in last position with ‘demonstrated stair-stepping’.

MOTO has highlighted that any company entering the touchscreen market should make sure that they don’t skimp on materials, allow ample time to develop their algorithms and closely integrate touchscreen hardware, software and user interaction development as early as possible in the product development process.

MOTO stated that your device will be of much higher quality if you follow these rules and consumers will definitely notice the difference.
