HP has been awarded Greenpeace’s ‘Best in Show’ award at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The award is for the HP Compaq 8000f Elite Ultra Slim Desktop PC, which has a host of environmentally friendly features.
Greenpeace has praised Hewlett-Packard at CES for the new computer due to the fact that it is the first Windows based PC to be free of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
This is a huge improvement for the manufacturer, who just last year was targeted by Greenpeace for failing to meet its deadline for phasing out toxics in its products.
In its latest Guide to Greener Electronics, which was released on Thursday, Nokia leads the rankings with a score of 7.3, followed by Sony Ericsson which was the only company to score full marks on all toxic chemicals criteria. Toshiba was next highest coming in third place, Philips was in fourth and Apple made a huge improvement rising from ninth place to fifth.
Samsung, Dell, Lenovo and LG Electronics picked up penalty points in the latest results due to the fact that they failed to follow through on a promised phase-out of toxic chemicals in their products. According to Greenpeace, these companies have delayed the phase-out to 2011 or beyond.
