Livescribe Inc has released a new Application Store to extend the functionality of its Pulse Smartpen beyond its core functionality of recording and linking audio to handwriting. Apps vary from games and entertainment to travel and education.

The beta launch of the Application Store offers consumers more than 30 paid and free apps to choose from for download. Some examples of the new applications include: the ability to hear a translated phrase in numerous languages, access fun facts, get help studying, listen to music and even play games like blackjack, video poker or hangman.

“The initial set of more than 30 applications only begins to tap the potential of the Livescribe Smartpen platform,” said Byron Connell, chief marketing officer of Livescribe. “We look forward to seeing our community of more than 5,500 registered developers create, develop and distribute the next generation of innovative paper-based computing applications to come.”

To check out the Application Store, consumers can visit www.livescribe.com/store or access it through the Livescribe Desktop software.

In addition to the beta launch of the Application Store, Livescribe has also released the 2.0 version of its mobile computing platform. This includes upgrades for both the Smartpen and Livescribe Desktop software – which will allow consumers to save, organise and share their notes and recordings from the computer, as well as download and install applications.

The 2GB Livescribe Pulse Smartpen is available through OfficeWorks, select Dick Smith stores and Apple.com for a RRP of $299.
