MELBOURNE: Ian Muir, founder of The Muir Electrical Company Pty Ltd and The Good Guys passed away last week after a short illness. He was 79 and is survived by his wife Joan, son Andrew and daughter Carolyn.

In a release to the media today, The Good Guys stated that Ian Muir opened his first store in North Essendon in 1952 and continued to drive the growth of electrical retailing throughout Australia culminating with the formation of The Good Guys in the early 90’s.

Muir was also a founding member of Narta and served as Chairman from 1982 to 1987.

“To both retailers and suppliers, he was a leader and an inspirational mentor for many, an industry icon until his retirement, showing his persistence, strength and courage in tough times,” said son, Andrew Muir.

“Ian was a determined visionary which is reflected by the success of The Good Guys today.”

Kay Spencer, managing director of Narta, paid tribute to Ian Muir.

"Ian was a founding member of Narta and obviously we appreciate and acknowledge his input in the early days of the group’s establishement," said Spencer.

"We extend our sympathy to his family, friends and close work colleagues."
