NEC has announced the restructuring of its Australian business, which will see the organisation divided into four business units, unfortunately 153 staff were retrenched during the process.

The four business units will focus on Unified Communications, Managed Services, Network Solutions and Display solutions. NEC has reasoned the restructuring on the fact that it will ensure NEC Australia is delivering on its ability to best meet the needs of its consumers and remain successful going forward.

During the restructuring process the Australian Research and Development Group had to be consolidated into a single global development unit, due to this 153 staff were made redundant across the business. Wataru Takeuchi, managing director at NEC Australia, expressed his disappointment towards the cuts.

“It is regrettable that we are being forced to make these retrenchments in Australia as part of this move and it has been a difficult decision,” Takeuchi said.

But Takeuchi emphasised that the decision will help the company in the future.

“NEC will now be able to offer a single interface with customers. This will enable us to empower our customers to get the most out of their broadband and communications investments.”

Despite the unfortunate news NEC has commented that its R&D commitment to Australia will still be strong and provide innovation to the market. Takeuchi also emphasised that the R&D centre will still employ dedicated engineers and research staff.

“The restructure aligns the R&D operation with our core business units and will continue to drive technology innovation for the business and government markets that have been central to our success for almost 40 years,” said Takeuchi.
