LG Electronics has overtaken rivals Motorola and Sony Ericsson to be third largest mobile phone distributor in the world.

LG over the past year have shipped out 100 million handsets around the world, just edging out rival Motorola with 99.9 million and Sony Ericsson with 96.6 million.

The competition has always been fierce between these three competitors and finally LG has surpassed both for the first time in its history.

LG have experienced a growth of 25 per cent from the 2007 figure of 80.7 million, quite a remarkable feat in the highly competitive mobile phone market.

But the fact still remains that both LG and all the other competitors still lag considerably behind the two top players.

Samsung, who retained second position, has sales figures of 200 million units. While the undisputed king of the mobile market, Nokia, sold a massive 470 million handsets, to remain at the top of the list.
