SYDNEY: Canon Australia’s website has been awarded a ‘number one’ ranking in the Hitwise Entertainment — Photography category for being the leading Australian website for visits in that category.

Hitwise is a leading Australian online measurement company that anonymously monitors consumer activity on over one million websites. Each quarter, Hitwise awards the 10 most popular websites across 160 categories.

According to Hitwise, its awards are based on popularity according to the percentage of user visits a website receives compared to other sites in their category during a specific period.

Hitwise announced that during the 2007, www.canon.com.au was ranked first by visits among all other Australian websites in the Hitwise Entertainment — Photography category.

“Our website is an extremely powerful and engaging research tool for consumers, so we’re thrilled that canon.com.au came in number one position for Entertainment—Photography,” said Canon Australia’s National PR Manager, Andrew Giles.

“A high percentage of digital camera consumers take their time to research their purchases online prior to going into store. This complements the in-store experience, which is critical. The value of good, knowledgeable sales people can never be underestimated.

Canon’s online brand strength also grew significantly in the last quarter of 2007 according to Hitwise. The search term ‘Canon’ grew its weekly search term share of traffic by over 50 per cent in this period. The number two search phrase during this period that contained the word ‘Canon’ was ‘canon printers’.

“Online marketing is one of the most effective ways that Canon can connect with its customers,” Giles said.

“It allows consumers to get up close to our brand in their own time, research products and understand what’s best for them. The online medium offers people access to rich sources of information on their specific area of interest.”
