SYDNEY: Toshiba ISD Australia has moved to reassure Australian retailers that it will continue aftersales and dealer support for HD DVD hardware, despite its announcement overnight that it will discontinue the HD DVD format.

“While we continue to believe HD DVD is the best format for consumers, based on its technological advancements and the value inherent in our player offerings, recent market developments have led us to the decision to choose new and different paths,” said Toshiba Australia general manager, Mark Whittard.

“We will continue to service and support all of our HD DVD customers and work closely with our retail partners to manage their specific business requirements.”

Toshiba Australia will hold a press conference at 11am today to explain its position in more detail.

HD DVD players have been on sale in Australia since late 2006.
