DUNEDIN: Fisher & Paykel has cut 28 jobs from their Mosgiel dishwasher and cookware plant in New Zealand, citing a downturn in housing markets around the world.
According to a report in the New Zealand Herald, the jobs would be “across the board”.
Fisher & Paykel’s vice-president of public relations, Paul Brockett, said the cuts also came as a result of implementing more efficient manufacturing processes, already in place at the company’s Italian and US factories.
Dunedin Chamber of Commerce chief executive John Christie told the paper he was not surprised to hear about the job losses, which were announced on Friday.
"The high dollar and increasing manufacturing costs are making it difficult for larger companies.
"We hope it’s a temporary fluctuation."
