TOKYO: Sony Japan has announced it will discontinue sales of the 20GB and 60GB Playstation 3 and sell only the 40GB model when shops holding current stock sell all models at the end of this month.

The move mirrors that of Sony Computer Entertainment Australia, which discontinued sales of the larger 60GB model at the end of October to focus on sales of the cheaper 40GB model.

Sony’s decision also means the end of PS2 backward compatibility in both countries.

In a release, Sony Japan stated they would focus on developing more games that highlighted the PS3’s capabilities. Upcoming releases in Japan will include the latest in the Metal Gear Solid series – Metal Gear Solid 4 – Guns of the Patriots, due for Japanese release in the last quarter of this year.
