Global small appliance market grows 5% to $60 billion

GfK has revealed the top six growth categories in the small appliance market which increased by 5% to $US60 billion at the end of 2016.

The data was revealed in a presentation by GfK Global Director of Small Appliances, Udo Jansen, at the IFA Global Press Conference in Lisbon, Portugal last week.

“It is another year of good growth and the important message here is that it is quite a healthy sustainable growth that we can track in the market,” Jansen told journalists from 50 countries at the event. “There is a lot of strong growth momentum, with positive results from all regions that we track.

“One of the key drivers is that floorcare is getting more and more cordless. In the last year you really see the massive growth of the cordless rechargeable handstick vacuum cleaner category. Also capitalising on the cordless aspect is the robotic vacuum cleaner category that has shown good growth,” Jansen said.

According to GfK, the top six fastest growing categories in the small appliances market are:

  1. Rechargeable handstick vacuum cleaners – up by 40% to €2.3 billion
  2. Robotic vacuum cleaners – up by 20% to €1.2 billion
  3. Air cleaners – up by 20% to €1.9 billion
  4. Fully automatic espresso machines – up by 12% to €1.2 billion
  5. Kettles – up by 11% to €1.4 billion
  6. Hair dryers – up by 18% to €1.35 billion

All international territories have shown growth in the small appliance category, according to GfK:
