Leaves uncertainty for suppliers.

When Appliance Retailer asked major suppliers about the impact of Big W cutting its buying staff, they remain tight-lipped, declining to comment, despite reports that contracts and intentions to purchase are being pulled without notice or explanation.

Other Big W suppliers have reportedly called on the Woolworths board to intervene as stock is left in warehouses or in transit from Asia.

They say that Big W CEO Sally Macdonald (pictured) has not explained her turnaround plan or strategy to suppliers, leaving many uncertain about their future with the discount chain.

A Big W spokeswoman rejected suggestions that suppliers and staff were being left in the dark over the new strategy, which is aimed at restoring profitability by cutting costs, sourcing at least 50% of stock directly from Asia, and reducing prices.

“Sally has and will continue to meet with Big W suppliers. They are important partners in our business,” the spokeswoman said.

“We are making some staff adjustments to make sure we have the right team choosing the right product for our customers,” she said.
